P2's Story of the Week: What the Ladybird Heard!
What a busy start to the week it has been for P2! Our classroom has been buzzing (and mooing, and clucking!) as we dived into our story, What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. While the ladybird in the book is famous for never saying a word, she certainly does a lot of listening. We decided to take our very own ladybird on a listening tour of the school to see what she could hear in our world!
We carried our ladybird to three very different places to see if she could spot any 'fine prize cows' or 'hefty red hens.' We visited:
-
The School Office: Did she hear the clicking of keyboards or the ringing of the telephone?
-
The Kitchen: Did she smell something yummy or hear the clatter of big pots and pans?
-
Outside during P1 Play: This was a noisy one! We think she heard lots of laughter, running feet, and maybe some cheering.
Tomorrow, we will be using our best phonics to write speech bubbles for the ladybird. We are going to help her finally 'speak' about everything she heard on her travels around our school!
To truly bring the story to life, we then immersed ourselves in a variety of play-based activities that let our imaginations run wild. We became directors and actors, using finger puppets and masks to retell the tale, even building a farm out of blocks to set the stage. Some of us created pin board freeze frames of our favorite scenes, while others got creative at the art table using stampers to design vibrant farm masterpieces. Whether we were navigating the small world farm or building with Duplo, every activity helped us understand the clever plot and the many characters the ladybird met along the way.
