The Titanic

This term, Primary 7 explored the topics of Titanic, buoyancy and fair testing as part of their science learning. They learned about the scientist Archimedes and his discovery of buoyancy, helping them to understand how large structures like the Titanic were able to float.

To put their learning into practice, the children were challenged to design and build their own floating vessels using a 15cm by 15cm piece of tin foil. Using their knowledge, they created boats capable of holding “passengers” while staying afloat. The winning design was the vessel that could hold the greatest number of passengers before sinking.

The pupils also ensured that their investigation was a fair test by using equal-sized materials, the same conditions, and a consistent method for adding passengers.

This was a fun, engaging and meaningful lesson, allowing the children to apply their scientific knowledge in a practical and enjoyable way while developing important skills in investigation and problem-solving.
